Peterborough Cathedral Visit

Venturing to Peterborough Cathedral is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. The Queen Katharine (Catherine) of Aragon is buried here and the last weekend of January, there is a celebration of her life in England. Catherine was the daughter of Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon (Spain).

About the Cathedral

The Cathedral has the most amazing architecture and is known to gothic influence.

Burial at the Cathedral

Mary, Queen of Scots

I recently became intrigued with Mary, Queen of Scots on our recent trip to Scotland, which you can read all about here. Mary was the Queen of Scotland and France and tried to claim rightful heir to England instead of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Mary was the daughter of King James V (famous for his additions to Stirling Castle, which is where we visited in Scotland) and Mary of Guise. Mary married the Dauphin of France, Francis, heir to the French throne and became King for a short while, until he died after one year of marriage, leaving Mary a widow, and having to flee back to Scotland, which brought upon its own challenges.

Mary tried to gain the affection of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, but to no succession and in 1587 was executed and buried at Peterborough Cathedral and the age of 44. In 1612, Mary’s son James exhumed her body from Peterborough and was placed in the vault of King Henry VII’s Chapel in Westminster Abbey.

Katharine, Queen of England

Katharine (Catherine) was the daughter of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I, who were Spanish Monarchs in the 1400’s. Isabella I of Castile has been such an inspiration to me throughout the years. She was a devout Catholic and wife. She stood by King Ferdinand of Aragon through many seasons of their marriage. The most famous story they may be famous for is of the funding of Christopher Columbus’s voyage to discover the New World (America). Isabella and Ferdinand betrothed Catherine to King Henry VII’s son Arthur, however he died of early into their marriage so the union was bestowed onto Henry VIII.

As you may know King Henry VIII was known for his many wives, as the saying goes- Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.

I made sure that we went in late January, as was when she was buried and there is an annual celebration of her life and reign in England. Spanish dancers come and parade in song and dance and food is served as it would have been Tudor style.

There is so much more to the cathedral and we truly enjoyed soaking in all the history.

Ciao! Until our next cathedral visit,

AMojita

    1. Aw so interesting! I have many from Spain and Cuba, hoping to visit those countries as well. I’m sure it means so much more to know you have family that once walked those streets
